Our recent trip to Wurzach was far more than a visit to a historic place. It was a journey into my family’s past — into the lives, fears, hopes, and resilience of those who came before me.
Before the war, my grandparents and parents lived ordinary lives shaped by work, community, and the quiet rhythms of the Island. My parents’ courtship blossomed in uncertain times, and their marriage was forged against a backdrop of growing tension and political upheaval. What should have been years of youthful optimism were overshadowed by events far beyond their control.
The politics behind the deportation order were impersonal and bureaucratic, yet their consequences were deeply personal. A decision taken at a desk altered the course of our family history. The notification of deportation came as a shock — abrupt, frightening, and final. There was little time to prepare, little understanding of what lay ahead.
Life in the Schloss at Wurzach brought hardship, uncertainty, and emotional strain. Yet it also revealed extraordinary endurance. Within those walls, families clung to routine, supported one another, and preserved their dignity in the face of confinement. Even in captivity, community and quiet acts of kindness sustained hope.
Liberation came as both relief and disbelief — freedom after years of restriction. The return to Jersey was not simply a homecoming, but the beginning of rebuilding: homes, livelihoods, and lives interrupted by war. The experience left marks that endured across generations.
I will conclude by sharing photographs from our recent visit, when survivors returned as part of the Partnerschaft to mark the 80th Anniversary of our liberation from the camp. Standing together in remembrance was deeply moving — a testament not only to survival, but to reconciliation, friendship, and the enduring importance of remembering.
